Billions and Tears

Consuelo Dieguez

In Bilhões e Lágrimas (Billions and Tears), journalist Consuelo Dieguez gathers profiles published since 2006, when she became a contributor to piauí magazine. Her first assignment, banker Luiz Cezar Fernandes, seemed unusual, since his story, from elephant to ant of the market, was already well known. As she followed him, however, Dieguez realized that the best journalism is made of untold stories, overlooked details, and unpretentious remarks: a good profile tells the reverse side of its subject.

Afterward, the author went on to unravel central figures of the country's recent history, such as Daniel Dantas, Luciano Coutinho, and Sérgio Rosa, to reveal the economic moment lived since Lula took office. Through individual stories, she shows how the State's share in the economy has grown, a fact essential to understanding Brazil today.

Brought together in a book for the first time, the essays offer a forceful analysis of the current Brazilian economy, drawing on the best and the worst of each actor.
